Emio Greco | Pieter C. Scholten
International Choreographic Arts Centre, Amsterdam
Emio Greco and Pieter C. Scholten have been working together in the search for new dance forms since 1995. In 1996 they presented their first joint work: the solo Bianco, which became the first part of the trilogy Between Brain and Movement. In addition to creating internationally successful dance productions, Greco and Scholten have pushed the boundaries of their dance company with opera, music and film. They have received several international awards and tour their shows all over the world. In 2009 Greco and Scholten merged all their activities into the international dance platform ICK. From 2014 to 2018 they were also directors of the Ballet National de Marseille (BNM), working on an intense European partnership between the two institutions.
At the heart of the work of the two artistic directors is the eloquence of the body that communicates with the audience on different levels. The movements are fluid but demanding, the direction of the gestures is projected from the diaphragm, the energy seems limitless. Greco and Scholten work intuitively, but rhythm, tempo and dynamics are orchestrated with the precision of an orchestra conductor. From the beginning of their collaboration the two have played with friction, with the intermediate processes: between instinct and discipline, between freedom and restriction, between the mastery of academic dance and the uninhibited drift of the flesh.
