Soloist Competition Rules

International Competition July 24—26 2026 .

Art. 1 – Categories

The Pollino Danza Festival Competition includes a single category: SOLOISTS, divided into the following age groups:

  • Kids: ages 7–10
  • Under 13: ages 11–13
  • Juniors: ages 14–17
  • Seniors: ages 18–23

Art. 2 – Sections

The SOLOISTS category is divided into two sections:

  • Ballet
  • Modern / Contemporary Dance

Art. 3 – Competition Phases

The Competition consists of three phases:

  1. Preliminary Round
  2. Semi-final
  3. Final
Art. 3.1 – Final

The Final Round will take place during the Gala Evening, in the presence of renowned artists from the national and international dance scene.
On this occasion, winners will be awarded Scholarships and Employment Contracts with Companies and Theatres in Italy and abroad.

Art. 4 – Participation in Sections

Each soloist may compete in both sections: Ballet and Modern/Contemporary Dance.

Art. 5 – Classical Dance

Soloists in the Ballet section must present two variations, in accordance with the following criteria:

  • Under 13
    Two free or repertoire variations, appropriate to the participant’s age and technical level.
    The use of pointe shoes is optional.
  • Juniors
    Two variations taken from the traditional classical repertoire, performed en pointe, and adapted to the participant’s age and technical level if necessary.
    The use of pointe shoes is mandatory.
  • Seniors
    Two variations taken from the traditional classical repertoire, performed en pointe.
    The use of pointe shoes is mandatory.
Art. 5.1 – Pas de Deux

A Pas de Deux may be presented, provided that one of the two performers acts exclusively as an accompanying partner and is not registered as a competitor.

Art. 6 – Modern / Contemporary Dance

Soloists in the Under 13, Juniors, and Seniors categories must present one solo, according to the following rules:

  • Preliminary Round
    Presentation of a solo taught during the Festival, identical for all participants.
    Evaluation will be based exclusively on this choreography.
  • Semi-final
    Presentation of an original solo, with a maximum duration of 2 minutes and 45 seconds.
  • Final
    The candidate will perform the solo selected by the Jury.
Art. 6.1

Participants who do not have a second solo may still compete by presenting only the solo learned during the Festival classes and performed in the preliminary round.

Art. 6.2

Rehearsals for learning the solo presented in the preliminary round will be scheduled by the Organization to ensure that all participants have sufficient time to learn the choreography.

Art. 7 – Costumes

  • Modern / Contemporary Dance
    For the preliminary round, a freely chosen costume is required, provided it is form-fitting and suitable for clearly showing body lines.
    For subsequent solos, costume choice is at the discretion of the choreographer.
  • Ballet
    For classical repertoire variations, the use of appropriate stage costumes, tasteful and consistent with the aesthetics of the discipline, is mandatory (e.g. tutu, Degas-style costume, leotard with skirt).

Art. 8 – Music

Each participant must provide the music file for their variation/solo in MP3 format.

The file must be sent by email to:
competition@pollinodanza.it

The file name must include:
First Name – Last Name of the participant

The email must specify:

  • Title of the variation/solo
  • Music
  • Choreographer
  • Duration

Art. 9 – Stage Rehearsals

Based on the number of participants, the Organization will prepare a schedule with the official rehearsal times.
Each participant will be entitled to:

  • one spacing rehearsal
  • one full run-through, supervised by the Festival Teaching Staff
Art. 9.1

Outside official rehearsal times and classes, participants may use the stage (if available) at their own responsibility.
The Organization declines all responsibility for unofficial rehearsals.

Art. 10 – Jury

The Jury’s decision is final and not subject to appeal.

The Jury reserves the right to:

  • withhold one or more awards
  • assign a number of awards different from those initially announced.

In the event that one or more Jury members are absent due to force majeure, the Organization may appoint replacements or proceed with the Competition using the members present.

Art. 11 – Awards

At the end of the Competition, the Pollino Danza Festival Organization will send an email containing information about the awards received.

To accept or request further information regarding an award, participants must contact the Organization within two months of the conclusion of the Festival.

Art. 12 – Fees

Competition registration is available through the online ticketing system.

Access to the Competition is free of charge for participants holding:

  • a Scholarship (full or partial)
  • an Open Card

Art. 13 – Consents

Art. 13.1 – Use of Name and Image

Participation in the Competition implies authorization for the Pollino Danza Festival to use the participant’s name and image for institutional and promotional purposes, in accordance with Articles 6–10 of the Italian Civil Code and Articles 96–97 of Law No. 633/1941, without any compensation claims.

Art. 13.2 – Personal Data Processing

Participation implies consent to the processing of personal data pursuant to Article 13 of Legislative Decree No. 196/2003, for organizational, informational, and promotional purposes.

Art. 13.3 – Liability Waiver (Minors)

The Organization provides insurance coverage exclusively for official Festival activities.
The legal guardian of the minor releases the Balletto Lucano Association and the organizing staff from any civil or criminal liability for events occurring outside official activities.
